About FMLM

The Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management is a UK-wide organisation that commits to develop excellence in medical leadership and management, driving continuous improvement in health and healthcare in the UK.

Background to the election

FMLM was established by the medical royal colleges and faculties at a meeting of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) in January 2011. Between May 2011 and March 2013 FMLM was governed by a Founding Council, with representatives from all AoMRC member colleges and faculties in the UK. Since March, FMLM has been governed by the FMLM Council which aims to set up a board of trustees and apply for charitable status within the next six months. The FMLM's Standing Orders were approved at FMLM's inaugural Annual General Meeting held on 15 October in Edinburgh and state that the Chair of Council (also referred to as the Chair) will be elected by ballot of the voting members.

The role of the Chair

The Chair is the directly elected chief officer of the Faculty who is answerable to the Board and to the members. The role is not remunerated, although reasonable and necessary expenses will be reimbursed by the Faculty. The Chair will preside at every meeting of Council, every meeting of the Board of Trustees and every Annual or Extraordinary General Meeting. The term of office will be for 3 years with the option of a second term of 2 years if re-elected by the voting members.
